I would appreciate any information folks might have, either general or
base-specific.
I strongly recommend you contact the Public Affairs office at each base along
your route, if you want to know the "current" (January 2004) rules. You can
find most of those folks by searching the Internet for the web site of each
base.

Last summer, we arranged a visit to the Air Force Academy. The rules for
getting on the Academy -- just to visit -- were in flux right up to three days
before we departed for the West. We laid the groundwork for our visit in
March/April.

We looked into the possibility of using the on-base accommodations at Fort
Carson near Colorado Springs, but those facilities were not available for
reservations as late as April. We made motel reservations in February to take
advantage of long advance reservations and lower costs but kept the option to
cancel without penalty. When it became clear Ft Carson would not be available, we
made the motel part of our itinerary.

Now is a good time to begin your research. Nobody knows what security level
the country will be at by summer, so have a backup plan that gives you
flexibility.
