In 2001 we stayed at Rich Cabins and in 2003 we passed thru but did program at Crooked Creek. At Rich Cabins the boys got to feed the cows as well as milk them, feed the pigs, clean out the barn (which entails shoveling the ....) and put the chickens up for the evening. If you've never seen a bunch of city boys chasing a bunch of chickens or shoveling out the barn, or milking a cow, your missing something. At Crooked Creek we stopped early in the morning and the boys got to put the animals out for the day. My son still fondly talks about trying to put the sheep out to pasture and it not wanting to go where he wanted it to. Again watching a bunch of city boys working with a bunch of farm animals is a great sight. Evening program was great at Rich Cabins, up on the big porch out of the rain that fell that night. Both cabin tours were interesting also, overall great programs.

In 2003 we stayed at Black Mountain and passed thru Clear Creek. Both programs were great, at Black Mountain they opened up the black powder range late in the evening as it rained all afternoon. The boys and adults had a great time shooting at the targets which included caps, neckerchiefs, and t-shirts. The boys also made a j-hook in the blacksmithing area which was given to the crew leader. The staff at Black Mountain was very laid back and were very accomodating, the boys really enjoyed the program there. As we passed thru Clear Creek we again stopped and did program. The talk on the beaver trade and the trapping demonstration were very interesting, the boys and adults also enjoyed one of my personal favorites, "hawk" throwing. When we went to the black powder range 4 crews showed up at the same time, so we drew lots to see who would shoot first. My son who was crew leader, was upset that he drew the low lot and we would be last to shoot but it worked out for the best. While the first 2 crews were shooting our sister crew decided they didn't want to shoot so they left. When it came our time to shoot the staff that was running the range let us shoot our time and also our sister crews time, so we were able to double up, which was great since our time had been cut short at Black Mountain. We decided not to do the cabin tour at Clear Creek as we still had to climb Mt. Phillips and the afternoon storms were building. Which leaves something else to do there on another trek.

All in all great programs, but then most of the programs at Philmont are great.

Yours in Philmont
