We found it useful to have the crew decide ALL the possible programs they
wanted to do from archery to climbing, to mountain biking, to ??; then we all
rank ordered the top 10 by a simple vote on each one. Then, we all looked at the
Trek book and found the best combination of treks and programs. Then, we
rank ordered those to find our top 5 choices. I think we got our crew's first
choice. We were not trying to hike 100+ miles.
In our crew, neither of the 2 advisors was "on vacation." We were on the
duty roster every day and we each had one vote when it came to votes. Only in
matters of discipline and safety did we have a golden vote; and even then, we
had one incident where we found it more productive and effective to turn the
disciplinary issue over to the crew leader and his assistant to resolve.
I strongly encourage youth-led trek selection.
