Calvin makes good points and it is definitely helpful to access those trek summaries to start to determine what type of trek you want. Keep in mind also that if lots of miles are your goal and main focus for the scouts, they will not be able to participate in as many programs. In 2002 on our treks the scouts picked the programs and miles and we arrived at a good combination (leaders helped as none of the scouts had been to Philmont so they didn't understand what some of the stuff was). Some days on the trail the scouts were tired and needed a little encouragement to do the programs.....they were alway glad they did afterward. So chose wisely and help the crew understand Philmont is backpacking and program.

In February-March of 2005, the "contact person" for your crew will receive
a booklet with descriptions. You'll need to select your top 5 choices and
send them in to Philmont on a card that is used for this purpose. None of
our crews have every received anything lower than their 3rd choice.

Pretty much so but there are minor changes from time to time. There
were major changes a couple of years ago but I don't believe there are
plans to do this again any time soon.
Al Thomson and Julian Love have done considerable work on comparing the
various treks. See Selden Ball's web page for more information.
