Our first two Philmont crews in 1989 didn't have special t-shirts.
In 1990, our troop went to Philmont as part of a two or three crew
contingent made up of several troops from our district. I thought their
t-Shirts, designed by one of the crew members, were quite unique.
The front of the shirts showed a "stick figure" with a very large brain.
The numbers of each of the troops were shown on the brain. Below the
stick figure was the lettering, "This is Your Brain Going Camping" (or
something to that effect).
The back of each shirt had another stick figure, this time with huge
muscled arms and legs, with a much larger brain in the shape of a
backpack, again with troop numbers shown. This time, the lettering was,
"This is Your Brain at Philmont".
I don't believe our 1993 crew had special shirts.
In 1995, we decided to try something new but the boys couldn't come up
with anything everyone liked so I asked my son who had been to Philmont in
1989 to see what he could design.
His design was a shirt with an 8 1/2" diameter circle on the front with a
red border. Within the circle was another 6" diameter circle with a red
border. In the area between the two circles, was "PHILMONT '95" in 3/4"
red letters/numbers with the Philmont cattle and horse brands on either
side just below the lettering. The bottom part of the area between the
two circles had our expedition number in 3/4" letters/numbers. A drawing
of the Tooth of Time (red outline with green trees/bushes) was in the
inner circle. Just below the outer circle was "TROOP 405" and below that
"GEORGETOWN, TEXAS" in 1/2" red letters.
During subsequent Philmont trips (1997, 1999, 2002 & 2003 Cavalcade), we
asked the youth crew members if they wanted to keep the same basic design
or come up with something new. Each year, they decided to keep the same
design and change the lettering. Our shirts are usually white or a very
light Grey in color.
We have added information (in red) to the back of the shirts, including
our council's name, the dates of the trip, the names of the members of
each crew and a "Our 12 Days of Adventure" list of the camps they stayed
at each night. This didn't work well in 2002 as the treks were changed
due to the fires so we wound up with shirts that didn't really include the
correct trek information. I also note which youth members are the Crew
Leader and Chaplain Aide too.
We always make two shirts for each crew member and one for the Ranger.
Typically, we use a 50% cotton/50% polyester blend which seems to work
well at Philmont and also cleans up well after the trip. We advise the
crew members to wash their shirts in cold water before the trip to help
make the printing set better. Last year for Cavalcade, the shirts cost
$12.50 each.
