[Philmont]: Thoughts on Trek Selection, advisors and discipline

My thought for what they are worth.

Trek Selection: This depended on 2 major things for our crew. 1) What did
the guys in the crew want to do? For us, they decided they did not want to
spend their time hiking only, they also wanted to try a number of the
activities. 2) We only took 2 adults and there was consideration given to
which treks a 53 year old (yours truly) and a 44 year old could take on.
Both of us being desk jockeys. The result worked really well with us
taking Trek 1 which allowed for trap shooting, rock climbing, Indian lore
and fly tying. The guys enjoyed it and so did we.

As for crew discipline, my suggestion is camping, camping, camping, camping
. . . . . Get your crew in the field as often as possible. We have them in
the boonies every month and it really helps. It lets everyone get used to
the little hassles - bad stoves, tent problems, being wet, being cold, being
tired. Even if the whole crew isn't involved, the scouts get used working
together. It made the basic camp setup at Philmont easy all the way around.
And, their experience reduces frustration which goes along way to ease
situations where discipline problems can come up.

I guess I am taking alot of words to say preparation and field time will
iron out the vast majority of discipline problems.

Have a GREAT TREK and enjoy the process.
