I started thinking about special happenings that occurred during my treks to Philmont and it was really hard to pinpoint one. I think that real impact of Philmont occurs after the trek, when people have had a chance to reflect on the entire experience and how they reacted to each day's challenges. I can remember watching my first co-ed crew sitting around the fire ring at Deer Lake Mesa laughing together, or watching two of our stronger youth carrying the packs of successive crew members who had passed a stomach virus to each other and were too sick to carry their own, or meeting up with Dr. Bob Klein's crew at Ewells Park a day behind him on Trek 30, or sharing a sunrise from Schaffer's Peak with my good friend Wally Feurtado.
However, the real impact of a Philmont trek is how it affects the lives of the young people who experienced it. Two of our crew's Philmont trekkers have become Rangers, four have gone back to Philmont for a Rayado trek, numerous members have described their Philmont treks as part of their college entrance essays, and one young man has walked halfway across America. Years after their treks, these young men and women have continued to remember the experience as something unique and special. What more can one person say. That is thanks enough.
