RE: [Philmont]: Philmont "Rules" - Timing

Doesn't the Ranger control the order of what is done in base camp?
While it may be ideal to go to logistics first, if the Ranger wants to
do health checks first that IS what is done. The other issues are "Is
it better to get the crew picture taken upon arrival or with everybody
else the first thing the following morning?" or "Could a visit to the
Ville Philmonte be squeezed in prior to the trail or after coming off
the trail?" or "Should the crew do laundry before or after the trail or
not at all?" Other than allaying the concerns of the lead advisor as to
what is going to happen next, does having an experienced Philmonter
really have value? Marginal at best, because regardless of what
experience the crew has at base camp or how efficiently and organized
the Ranger handled base camp functions, what is long remembered is the
experience in the back country.

Now I know that some advisors realize that the bus out of base camp is
dependent on arrival time and I know one really, REALLY good friend who
insists on the first bus in the morning just to limit the base camp
"circus", would getting out on the first bus or last bus improve the
already great experience the crew is going to have anyway? I think not.

Just my two cents worth!

As an alternative suggestion, I share the list with my Crew at my first
Crew meeting or in one of my first Crew newsletters. As with physical
preparation, you want people up to speed as of your first shakedown, as
opposed to your arrival at Basecamp. Probably even more important for
provo Crews.

Reviewing the Basecamp circus just before arrival is an excellent
suggestion. This can be done either by a Philmont veteran Advisor
(recent!) or Philmont veteran Scout - if anything, it will carry more
weight and value coming from a Scout. This is just one of the many
advantages of having a veteran or two in your Crew. If you have none,
but are in a Contingent, find out who else has a Phil-Vet, and (with
some prior prep) have them give a "basecamp orientation" talk for you.
I have gladly done so for all of my various multi-Unit Contingents - and
expect to do so again this summer. A good (and useful) way to fill
downtime on a bus, train, or in an airport. Remember, "Knowledge is
Power".
