RE: [Philmont]: Philmont "Rules" - Timing

Hi Wally,
I think you missed Bob's point and mine, or maybe I missed yours. What
we were both (I think) alluding to was preparing the crew for what
awaited them at basecamp. It can be a bit frustrating to sit around and
do a lot of waiting if they don't understand why. If you explain the
purpose of all the things they have to go through it makes it easier for
them to get through it, as well as allows them to prepare (bring a
book).
I think it is always better to know what is going on. When there are
actual choices to make (should I go to services tonight, or wait until
we get off the trail?), they have the knowledge they need to make good
decisions.
Philmont has it laid out so well that you don't need to know what is
going on and can make it through fine. However, as we have seen, some
Rangers make too many assumptions for their crews and it would be nice
if the crew members knew they actually had a few options.
Having the pre-basecamp talk is a benefit of having access to an
experienced leader or crew member, but it is not a necessity. It just
adds to an already pleasant memory if things go smooth.
YIS,
 Tom
P.S. Got our waiting list number today "702". Guess I'll steer my guys
to the council contingent. Looks like the longer you wait, the lower
your number, so if you haven't heard yet, say a prayer.
