Check your Council Contingent and see if they have a full compliment. Sometimes you can negotiate and get the whole crew so the council doesn't loose money on deposits. Also, I got a crew because I agreed to be the contingent leader (2001)
Right now I have a crew for 06, but if I take that crew, the council currently doesn't have a contingent leader so I may forfit my reservation and go with the council . Usually you can do better on transportation costs anyway.
Since it's close to you check out Manistee Quest run by the chicago area council. It's on the North Country Trail which I'm sure you are familiar with. www.chicagobsa.org
They are also offer an onsite "Venturing Camp" and scouts can sign up to. It's outside the box of the normal camp program.
Another one on my list is a High Adventure base run by a council in Maine. don't remeber the name though.

We are 289 on the wait list for 2005 and still haven't heard anything and this is jambo year when they go higher in the waiting list so at 281 it would be a stretch for 2006.
We just found out we are 685? on the wait list for 2006....guess we'll plan for something else.

Philmont 2006 lottery wait list notice received by US Mail today. While we happen to be Group# 281, which is a relatively lower number than the 1,726 groups, its a little difficult to make plans yet. Does any recollect roughly how many groups were selected last year from the wait list to be offered an active expedition?
Regards.
