The most recent fatality at Philmont (in 2002) was due to an asthma
attack. A youth from San Antonio. I seem to remember that the crew
arrived at Harlan (their final night on the trail) and set up their
tents. The young man retired to his tent to rest while the rest of the
crew did program, had an asthma attack and passed away. His father and
brother were in the crew too, and the boy had an inhaler. Just a very
unusual event.
But, during four consecutive fairly recent years, adults died from heart
related problems. I believe three of those were during treks and the
other was a Wood Badge staffer who was there for pre-WB training. After
four deaths, Philmont got VERY SERIOUS about the weight, high blood
pressure, etc. situations.
So, when you are reading and completing those somewhat "scary" medical
forms, there is a good reason ... called living to see another day.
