I agree with Dave. We tried not to focus on the nit-picky aspects of
saving weight/bulk. Pulling off all the packaging just makes for a lot of
crushed and indistinguishable food that is not longer neatly packaged by
meal and portion.
Our crew ate just about everything we were issued except for a few items
based on personal taste or diet. There was almost nothing that we did not
want as a group. Most of us did not like the gatorade, but a few of the
crewe did, so they got plenty.
Philmont does a really good job on food, quantities and quality. As for
tastes, your milage may vary. Last summer many crews hated the cheescake.
For us, it was one of the culinary highlights. I even found one in a swap
box, that I carried for the rest of the trek, saving it for a special time.
I wound up bringing it home, waiting for that special time. Then the family
dog tore my pack apart and ate it for her 'special' time. Man that stuff
was good. (I nearly killed the dog, and still don't trust her. Yes, we've
considered couples conseling, but thats another story.) If you have any
left overs, I'll gladly take them off your hands.
With respect to bringing extra food: I personally don't see the need
unless you have dietary issues. We ate well, and the extra things a few of
the crew brought were not really used. The exception to this is salt and
pepper. I was a very popular guy for having that in my pack. I small film
canister per crew is good for 12 days.
 Happy Hiking,
 Tom
