[Philmont]: RE: stripping meals

It can't be stressed too much that what YOUR crew does is dictated by your crew, and not others.

Which means that one objective of your shakedowns is to begin to understand your crew's tastes and preferences.

I would add two general observations to the prior posts:

1. The trail menu has undergone an almost radical change over the past few years - the 2004 meals were very different from those in 1999, including the change to 2 person packaging from 4. Not to mention the intervening crackermania, gatorademania, and last year's gorpmania. And there has been a decided improvement in quality. Comments from the past need to viewed as history, not necessarily as what you will see on the trail in 2005.

2. Almost all the breakfast are now "no cook" and soup has been eliminated from the dinners. Almost all the deserts are also now cold. If your crew likes hot breakfasts, you may need to supplement. I would also strongly recommend supplementing with at least one instant soup packet per person as an emergency item - if you get caught in a cold rain, you might be looking for something warm.

Last fall our Autumn Adventure crew supplemental oatmeal, hot choclate, and hot chocolate for every breakfast without hot items. And instant soups for about half the dinners. Admittedly, adults in a colder season with no time constraints for program, etc. so our breaking camp was leisurely, but we used it all.

My recommendation to first time crews is only strip out what you know that you absolutely will not eat, ever. After that, if you find that you are not eating various items, drop them in the swap boxes that are at every staffed camp and commissary.
