Al makes some very good comments in his last note. Particularly adding at
least one soup packet per crew member. This would have been handy for us on
the day we got caught in a hail storm right after working up a full sweat
climbing Phillips. I went hypothermic in no time flat. (No problem, we all
knoew what we were dealing with and how to handle it. Textbook treatment,
worked like a charm.) Soup would have been a good thing to have in this
case, but we made due with the regular dinner, it just took a little
longer.
WHat works for your Crew is the main thing to consider. Some groups enjoy
the process of cutting the onces and really get into it, but don't let it
get too obsessive. It can cut into your enjoyment and lead to a lot of time
and discussion on who is carrying how much.
The last point I wanted to make is that oatmeal can be consumed cold from
the package. (In 2004, it was the only breakfast item that required
lighting the stove.) It is not nearly as bad (cold)as you might think. We
NEVER ate a breakfast in the campsite. Our routine was to get, pack up, get
out, and have breakfast on the trail after about 45 minutes of walking. In
the beginning, I really didn't like this idea, but as it turned out, I came
to enjoy it. It was more pleasant to eat breakfast after being 'warmed up'
and getting a mile or two start on the day.
Again, these are all just ideas and alternate "techniques", help your Crew
find what works for them, and try to help them keep an open mind.
Happy Hiking,
 Tom
