Go to Selden's web page for answers to this and virtually all your
questions.

Anyway, coming from NC, you'll want to take a plane to either Albuquerque or
Colorado Springs (or possibly Denver) and rent a coach or two (for the
entire 12 days, it is a bit challenging to return the coach while on the
trek) to take you there and back. Figure about a 4 hour one way coach ride.

You'll see a lot of crews take the Train, but that appears to be only
appropriate if you are conveniently located near the service that goes to
Raton. It appears an undesirable option if you have to switch trains.
Taking the train is a wonderful experience if practical. Philmont has a
regular bus that picks up and drops off for the train at Raton.

Obviously, a lot of crews rent/charter a bus and drive, but from NC that
seems a bit much. Still has the problem of what the bus does the 12 days
you are there.

A lot of crews use the stop in Alb or CS to do some pre-trek
touring/adventures. Whitewater rafting, national parks, that sort of stuff.
There are companies that will pick you up at the airport, take you to
various things for 2-3 days then take you to Philmont (and back to the
airport after). This is a very popular option but can be a budget buster.
If you want to roll your own, there are economic places to stay (like with
the Koshare dancers) while you do your own touring in your rented coaches.
