David,
Amtrak is a very viable option from High Point. You will need to check
the schedules and my have a layover in Washington, D.C. (this might be a
good thing). You have a couple of options to go from DC to Chicago.
One takes you up through West Virgina, a really beautiful ride. You
will have the day in Chicago and then take the train from Chicago to
Raton. You could also continue on and go to Grand Canyon (again by
train) and return back to Raton for Philmont.
I remember turning 14 on the train on the way to Philmont many moons
ago. We plan to go by train in 2006, we have an arrival date the end
of July. Great way to celebrate your birthday.
Say Hi to Larry Warlick for me.
