Re: [Philmont]: what to wear around camp when not hiking - option

My daughter and I simply went to the store and hefted each "tennis" shoe
and ended up each with a lightweight pair to bring. The new running shoes
are all pretty darn light and the ones we bought were under $40. We just
leave them with our backpack gear and ONLY use them for backpacking.

I find that your traditional water shoes just aren't that comfortable to be
in. No arch support and the elastic is kind of constricting. Some of the
sandals are the same way--no arch support. When my feet are weary, an arch
support makes mine feel better. Both our rangers (in '02 and '04) wore
sandals as their camp shoes, but in both cases, they wore socks with them.

The big drawback to open toe shoes (as was mentioned) is that some program
areas require closed toe shoes and that means, you have to wear your hiking
boots to program. Our kids setup camp, changed into their tennis shoes,
and then headed out for program. Blisters in our treks were few and far
between and I attribute part of that to the fact that their feet got to dry
out in their camp shoes each day. YIS. Mike ('76, '02, '04)
