Our crew came up with the following method for stripping meal weight: We sorted out all the breakfast items, lunch items and cookies into piles. Each person took what they planned to eat and carried that food themselves. (We carried the crackers necessary until the next commissary stop as "group gear" rather than breaking down the cracker packets, but took only the kinds of crackers liked by everyone.) We kept all the dinner meals without much stripping, but as we learned what the picky eaters didn't like, we swapped entres at staffed camps. Worked like a charm.
I would recommend using this method ONLY after a few days on the trail as each crew member learns what his or her caloric requirements at Philmont are. A very experienced crew could use it right off the bat, but we stumbled on it after carrying two gallon zip locs of cookies for three days because not everyone could agree to get rid of them because we "might" need them.
