Well,
I shot from the hip and, thanks to the information provided to me by Mollie McAuliffe, I would like to retract my assertation regarding the BSA policy prohibiting open-toed shoes. I cannot find sufficient facts to back up my statement, so therefore I am retracting it.
Best I could find were rules for specific camps, including the 2005 Jamboree, which directly and outright ban open-toed shoes. But, in line with Mollie's assertations, I was unable to find any specific rules that generally prohibited such clothing while participating on scouting activities.
However, I will not change my local rule for crew or campers from our Troop in the interest of the safety of big toes everywhere.
