Doesn't look like we dealt with getting from the airport to Philmont. Can't
really predict costs too closely without knowing which direction the
requesting party is coming from.
There really aren't too many options. It appears it may be cheaper to rent
a car in ABQ or Colo. SPrgs for the full two weeks than to take a cab or
some other shuttle due to the cost of getting them there to pick you up.
An alternative is to fly to some place that is on the Southwest Chief route
for Amtrak (which, with time constraints means Albuquerque or Kansas City),
take the train to Raton and the Philbus to Philmont. Not the best when you
add up the costs and delays.
Lots of crew take the southwest chief, so if you get on the train, you'll
meet other PHilmont bound passengers. If you fly to ABQ, the east bound
train is scheduled to get into Raton 5:44 pm, but is not unknown to be as
many as 3-5 hours late.
You'd pick up the train in ABQ at a scheduled time of 1:10 pm, so it is
supposed to be a 4:34 train ride. The round trip train ride is about $75.
Add airfare to Albuquerque from whereever you are and $15 each way Philbus,
so about $100 plus air. We had one of our advisors and his son join our
2003 crew in ABQ on the train because of the son's time constraints. That
lad happened to be our crew leader, too :-)
Going the other way, Kansas City is the nearest major hub on the train
route, so a train from there to Raton is an option, at about $150 for a 13
hour train ride (scheduled is 10pm in Kansas City to arrive at about 10:30
am in Raton, again, 3-5 hours late is not unknown), then Philbus (again $30
for the round trip) plus whatever your airfare is to KC.
The rental car, again, is about 3.5 hours from either Colo Sprgs or ABQ,
another 1.5 hours from Denver. You'll have to look at options for a 12 day
rental.
Taking the train lacks flexibility which is probably a requirement for the
one advisor. ALso, Philmont won't let you check in until everyone is there,
so you have to plan on the advisor getting there timely. July 25 is your
arrival date, and they want crews to checkin before noon (though they are
very flexible). That is a Tuesday, so the advisor has to look at July 24 as
a travel day to get there on the morning of July 25 (unless he rents a car
and flies in *early* Tuesday morning).
If July 24 is not a problem, what about the weekend? That will add a lot of
flexibility. He could arrive on July 24 and stay at tent city while he
waits for the rest of the crew to arrive on the morning of July 25.
THis advisor (I'll use "he" for convenience) could also try contacting the
other crews arriving on July 25 to see if he could join them along their way
if they are flying and taking a shuttle of some kind from ABQ or CS.
Another option is the Philstaff site (www.philstaff.org) where he could try
to hitch a ride with someone if their schedule matches.
However, the bottom line is that if this advisor is *really* tight for time,
he will have to fly a red-eye to ABQ or CS and rent a car for the 12 days of
the trek and park it at the Philmont parking lot until he gets back.

Don Roberts
