Bill's book is written from the perspective of a Philmont Staffer returning
with his son as an advisor and describes those adventures in journal form.
While it may be better suited to those already familiar with Philmont, it is
a good one for anyone who has been, is going to, or hopes to go back to
Philmont. Bill's other book, "Last Flight of Liberator 41-1133" should be
of special interest to those that might find themselves at the crash site on
Trail Peak.

Bill recommends several other pieces in his book, specifically "High
Adventure among the Magic Mountains" by Philmont's first general manager
Minor S Huffman and "Philmont: An Illustrated History" by Steve Zimmer &
Larry Walker.

David Carter's "Philmont: A timeless experience" while a coffee table book,
describes the ranch and its history with no assume basis of knowledge. The
pictures are, as the saying goes, worth 1000 words.

Finally Michael Wallis' "Beyond the Hills The Journey of Waite Phillips" is
a biography that follows Waite Phillips from his birthplace in Iowa ( 1883),
death of his twin brother (1902), marriage (1909), the creation of Philmont
as his Ranch and its ultimate deeding to the BSA, and his death in
California (1964).

All of these titles are listed on Philmont's trading post web site at
www.toothoftimetraders.com/philmont in the multimedia section under history
books. Also don't miss the Philmont Fieldguide in the backpacking and
camping books section.

Philmont's own brochure, serves as a fine introduction, and when I find a
copy, I'll post its number and source. Guess I know what I'll be doing now
that I'm finished with shoveling the driveway ...

Good morning!

What book would you recommend to parents who want learn about Philmont? I am
not looking for a book for a parent preparing for Philmont as an Advisor. I
am looking for a book for a parent of a potential crew member who wants to
learn about the Ranch and the Philmont experience.

The book that comes to my mind is "Return to the Summit of Scouting" by
William F. Cass.
