I also must weigh in on the issue of adult preparation. To make sure our
adults and youth take their pretrek training serious we have an agreement
that they sign when they make their deposit for the trek. We require adults
to make 80% of all pretrek hikes ( 5 backpacking trips) and youth must make
60% of the trips. However, we encourage 100% participation on all pretrek
trips. Failure results in being dropped from our crews with no refunds.
This might sound tough, but on the other hand it is not fair to the other
participates who prepare for their trek to have it ruined by an individual
who doesn't feel they need to train or be part of a team. See our website
below for our troop's trek requirements ( they are located under the
Philmont buttons on our website) I would also be very wary on an individual
who decided not to go on a pretrek hike cause of rain or weather. I once had
a father tell me he was not going on the pretrek hike cause he did not want
to get wet. That's when I ask him what he was going to do on the trail for
eleven days if it rained. He acted like he never thought it would rain on
the trail.

Words of Wisdom- if you have an adult who does not do physical training
before they go then you can expect for them to have physical problems on the
trail.
