RE Your adults:
Establish a minimum participation in prep activities threshold for
EVERYONE in the crew, including adults, and hold everyone accountable to
it. NO EXCUSES, no hard feelings, no explanations needed. Make it,
take it. IMHAWIO, the single most important thing the Lead Advisor does
is ensuring the physical readiness of the crew, including him/her self
and the other adults.
Why is morale typically higher in an Airborne and tank unit in the US
Army? Because everybody gets to battle the same way, regardless of
rank, every officer has to do the same thing as his soldiers. It's the
same thing at Philmont. To see the "leveling" that happens when
everybody makes the goal together, suffering the same trails and
conditions, is what makes young men grow up, and makes old men "young".
