Scott,
I'll provide information on the programs we have participated in. This is
mostly in the South / Central part of Philmont.
At Crater Lake, there are two activities. Tie making, and spar pole
climbing. Crews are instructed how to make a railroad cross tie out of Ponderosa
Pine, using hand tools. The Boys loved it. Spar poles are large trees, about
twenty feet tall that crews will climb using a special belt, and spikes while
in a harness. They also have a fabulous campfire, with lots of singing.
At Fish Camp, the crew will learn how to make their own flies, and go fish
in the nearby creeks.
At Cyphers Mine, crews get to tour the old mine shaft, (yes, actually go
inside). They can pan for gold in the creek, and they have great campfire
program at night.
At Cimmaroncito, crews will get to climb on the side of a large rock
formation. The scouts seemed to enjoy this, but it seemed kind of short on time.
However, there were many other crews wanting to get on the rocks.
At Black Mountain, crews are treated to Blacksmithing and Black Powder
rifles. Scouts actually get to beat on a piece of steel, and make something out
of it. Lots of fun. Shooting anything is always fun for my group, but the
Black Powder seemed to be extra special. Do not let your kids talk you into
using your hat for a target. They will all become marksmen in a heartbeat.
At several backcountry camps, you can also "brand" your equipment. Be
careful, or you will burn all the way through boots and belts.
