Answers embedded (apologize in advance for a couple that are flip, but I could not resist)

I'm part of a group putting together an all adult Autumn Adventure. Half of the participants have not been to Philmont as an adult. With that said can any of you repeat AA's give us some advice?

When is the best time to go?
As far as temperatures / weather, you could get most anything anytime. Regarding color, the aspens turn in mid-late September in the north, a little later to the south.

What is the preferred length in the outback?
Whatever your crew wants. Our crews have done six nights/seven days in the backcountry, plus two travel days to make a Saturday to the following Sunday trip.

Can we go tentless?
Meadow crashing? No. Use cabins? While in the past that was permitted, it is now discouraged (possibly prohibited?). Unless you setup at a central camp and day hike from it (and get permission to use a cabin), you will need tents.

What equipment do we need to take?
Equipment list is the same as for summer treks. You need to provide your own tents, or rent from Philmont ($4 / day). Also provide your own dining fly and pots. Basically, the stuff that in the summer needs to be inspected / cleaned when returned.

What is the best site to camp in and take day hikes from?
Best? Your call. Candidates certainly include Fish Camp, Beaubien, Cimarroncito, and Miranda.

Have you ever done any of the peaks on an AA?
Absolutely. Baldy in 2000 and 2004, Tooth of Time and Trail Peak in 2002, Phillips planned for 2006.

Are there any facilities open in base camp?
Limited hours for the Tooth of Time Traders. Tenting is at the Medical Lodge tent city, and the showerhouse next to that is open.

What is the best size crew?
How many are you? Like the summer, crew sizes range from 7 to 12. In the past, weve been in the middle of that. This year we are looking at 2 (maybe 3) crews; havent decided on the logistics of that yet, but probably will be sister crews.

Thanks for any input.
Feel free to ask about anything else. It is a great program!
