I carried a Gregory Whitney rated which in "Large" is rated around
5900. I could have gotten by with a bit less space, but it will depend
on how careful you're willing to be about leaving stuff behind. I tend
to get cold easily, so I carried a light fleece jacket as well as long
underwear. I also have too much first aid training so I carried a
rather extensive and fairly bulky first aid kit. Given that, and the
bulk of the Phil food, I would have found anything under 5000 too
tight. However, I've seen others who are more able to go minimalist
than me get by nicely with smaller packs, too.
Tw Cook - 2005 622-N5 and going back again in 2007 if I can get in shape
