Also depends on your crew configuration. If you have a crew with 9 youth
and 3 adults your options are:
1- Four 3-man tents, with 3 adults in one tent
2- Six 2-man tents, but one adult will have to stay with their son/daughter
3- Three 3-man tents for the youth, a 2-man for two adults, and a 1-man for
the remaining adult.

>From what I understand, they are not forbidden as long as they are not a
bivy.

I've seen all of the above options work well. I personally experienced
option 1, with 4-man Timberlines as our 3-man tents, and we never had a
problem trying to find space in a campsite for the larger footprint.

They shouldn't but I have seen a couple on trail.   .-I took a Sierra
Designs Clip Flashlight 2 CD (2 man) tent and used it as a one man tent.
Pack weight was less than 5 pounds and frankly I liked the extra space.
They're on sale at Campmor for around $120.00.
