My understanding was that 1 man tents were generally discouraged but
allowed on an exception basis in the case of an odd man (or woman).
For pack size, I carried a 5400 ci pack in '04 and it was pretty full
(and heavy) early in the trip. I wished I had a somewhat smaller pack.
If there is space, it seems to get filled. If there's space in my pack
it's easier (for someone else or me) to fill it rather than be more
space sensitive. I guess you just need to get someone else to carry a
big pack :).
The 2004 Philmont guidebook recommends a 4800 ci +/- pack (internal
frame). I've used the 5400 ci pack on several other trips and have come
to like it but would readily live with a 4800.
