With all due respect ot Mr. Unger, this does, in fact, only apply to Bivy
sacks. The claim by Philmont is a Bivy looks too much like a log (rather
nonsensical claim, IMHO, but not for the consumption of the boys, they get
taught the Philmont rules without our contrary opinions).
Another thing our Ranger tried to teach us was to avoid putting tents in a
straight line. The idea being that a deer would jump over one or two tents,
but if three in a row, land on #3. I don't think that is very realistic
either, but we played it for the boys anyway.
In fact, it would appear that though philmont guidelines are 2 person tents,
any number in the tent is okay with them. Larger tents may, however, find
some difficult footprints in some camps (like deer lake meadow, for one).
