I did our '04 Trek with a 3900CI Kelty Trekker, more than adequate ... but
... with an additional 2000cu or so strapped on in the form of a waterproof
stuff sack.
As others have said, internal frame packs require fitting and are sized
(usually s/m/l) for specific torso sizes ... these sizes also materially
change the capacity. Its hard to imagine that a 6'1" person is matched to
an internal frame pack of just 4200CI ... You don't have to fill your pack,
but it better fit right. A fit guide is available at
http://www.backcountrygear.com/manufacturers/gregory_fit.cfm
REI has a good rundown on pros/cons of various pack designs and sizes at
http://www.rei.com/online/store/LearnShareDetailArticlesList?categoryId=Camp
ing&url=rei/learn/camp/rghbkpk3f.jsp&vcat=REI_EXPERT_ADVICE_CAMPING
I think the 4200 will be marginal, and would suggest something in the
neighborhood of 5500-6000CI (internal frame) including the 2000ci for your
sleeping bag) a number in the specs for internal frame and not in the specs
for external frame.
See Joe Simonis' post wrt tenting
We did the 3 youth per eureka TL4 plus 2 adults in a TL4 and one adult
in a single (big time snorer) No issues from the ranch or ranger ... it was
not a bivey ...
I also don't buy the footprint issues others have brought up before ....
4 TL4s take just about the same space as 6 TL2s (or Philmont standard
issue) ... we didn't have space issues anywhere.
Happy trails.

Two questions for the list. One of our advisors purchased a Gregory
internal frame backpack rated at 4200 cubic inches. Will this be enough
capacity for an 6'1" adult, in your collective opinions? He can return it
and get something else. Also, this is a person that has backpacked in the
past and will continue to do the same after Philmont. Second, can advisors
carry one man tents? Are there any opinions on this as well?
Thanks.
