The Philmont story (urban legend, or maybe not!) is that one man tents are
discouraged because to a hungry bear, they look like a real big burrito
<laughing>! Since bears are color-blind, it doesn't matter if it is
red/blue/florescent orange, they all look delicious to them <g>!
On a serious note, I upgraded to a bigger pack in 2004. My new one is a
Kelty Ultra-Tioga (5600 cu in). The extra room was GREAT! In 2002, I was
really jamming stuff in my old pack (which was the one I hiked Philmont
with in 1976). The extra ounces of pack weight in my new pack were WELL
worth the extra room. Not that I brought much more "stuff", but my food
partner and I appreciated the fact that our food wasn't crushed anymore.
The one luxury item that I added was my camp pillow. No room for it in
2002, but plenty of room in 2004. In 2007, I'm contemplating adding a
"Slinglight" or similar type of chair.... YIS. Mike Conkey ('76, '02, '04
and hopefully '07)
