We found that with the reduction in food each day from a four day pickup, if
we did not redistribute each day, we would have the boys who have the food
for the fourth day carrying a load that whole time, while boys with food for
the first day had 3 days without. We used redistribution of crew gear as
the way to rebalance without having to break up food packages and figure out
where the food went.
Another highly surprising thing that happened to us was that we did not tend
to have the same slow people each day. Depending on conditions (rainy,
muddy, dry, high altitude, just after a pickup), different people would be
slow. We had never experienced that before. Only on two of our days was
the slow one an adult (neither time me :-). I was actually rather surprised
at how easily I kept up, and I carried some extras, like the crew first aid
kit and tarp and at least one bear rope because I wanted to know where those
things were.
We dump all our crew gear in a common pile whenever we get into camp, so who
has what did not ever seem to be an issue. In the morning, we would
redistribute it into what looked like fairly even piles and each person
would take a pile. We would make sure we knew where lunch was, though :-)
