Most of our AA guides have camped on porches. A few adults have too.
Most of us stayed in tents. We've also stayed in cabins but I don't
believe Philmont allows that anymore unless the weather is terrible.

> Have you stayed in tent city before or after a trek?

Our last crew (2004) stayed in tent city before the trek.

For our first couple of crews, we drove straight through to Philmont,
arriving by 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. Two or three other crews spent the
night before arriving at Philmont at the St. James Hotel or at the Kit
Carson Motel in Cimarron.

I'm not sure what we'll do next time but we won't drive straight through
trying to get into the back country on the day of arrival.

Yes. By noon or early in the afternoon.

Drive to a turnaround or near a camp and leave the vehicles there.

We've had six AA crews. All but one stayed at a "base camp" and did side
hikes. Camps we've used for our "base camp" have included:
Hunting Lodge near Cito
Ponil (Little Norway Cabin)
Abreu
Miranda
Beaubien
Cimarroncito
Zastrow
