No shortage of opinions here ... ever ... :-)
I believe that crew gear ... stoves, tarp, fuel, water purifiers, bear rope,
etc should be assigned to spcific individuals ... this worked well for us,
but I'm sure there are other options.
I believe that food should be evenly distributed daily ... its all going up
in a bag overnight anyway so simply knowing how many bags each should carry
on a daily basis worked well for us. An improvement I'll suggest to my '06
crew will be that on any given day eating buddies carry their
breakfast/lunch for that day and that the cooks carry that day's dinner. We
didn't do this in '04 and had at least one "empty all the packs" drills at
lunch. Also we never ate breakfast in camp, we chose to hike for an hour or
so, or to a specific spot, for breakfast. The only wrinkle here being the
discovery of a scout that didn't perform well without a little fuel ..
easily addressed with some "snacks" picked up from drop boxes along the way
We did adjust the food bag distribution at one point to lighten one of our
participant's load, but that was temporary.

We found that with the reduction in food each day from a four day pickup, if
we did not redistribute each day, we would have the boys who have the food
for the fourth day carrying a load that whole time, while boys with food for
the first day had 3 days without. We used redistribution of crew gear as
the way to rebalance without having to break up food packages and figure out
where the food went.
