Al Thomson sez:

YOU MUST decide... ABSOLUTELY. And realize that the purpose of shakedown
hikes is to discover what works for your crew and what does not. Shakedowns
are NOT for physical conditioning - each crew member must do that on his
own. But as a shakedown will also show who is not in shape, you should do a
reasonable amount of miles.

...

Couldn't agree more.

wrt water we did two things ... first, everybody (we treated youth & adults
as equals) carried an extra litre of water for the dinner meal every day ...
independent of the type of camp, wet or dry. This helped get dinner started
that much faster. The water crews re-filled these bottles after the meal.

We used two water carriers for the dry camps as well. Everybody had at
least three litres of personal capacity (1 for the crew) many had 4-5 (i had
three nalgens plus the bladder) Everybody tanked up at the last water and
typically carried three liters minimum as follows:

2 litres in nalgene or bladder for drinking on the way in ... remember there
are opportunties to top-off along the way, your daily navi-guesser & crew
leader need to factor these things in to your daily plan. This water also
includes whatever water you plan for the evening meal's beverage.

1 litre for the crew

For dry camps we also carried another litre for the next day's hike out

We passed the carriers around normally every mile or so, or factored it into
the overall food load (a food bag is about the size and weight of a litre)

This is what we did in '04, it is likely to be different in '06 as the
people are different and will likely settle on a slightly different
protocol, as Al said your crew must decide for itself. I'd strongly suggest
that you treat at least one of your shaedown hikes as a dry camp.
