More on dry camps and water...
When we did Phillips last summer, we left from the Clear Creek side about
mid morning. We all had 4.5 quarts of personal water in three 1.5 quart
bottles. We also filled 2 ten liter bladders (MSR). These had been specifically
bought and tested based on the fact that they could be easily attached to the
outside of almost any external frame pack. (We almost all use external frame
packs, about 5500 cid, but that's another thread.) We had carried 2.5
gallon bladders on earlier treks and passed them up and down the line. Worked,
but was a real pain. We started by giving the bladders to two of our "horses."
The idea was that they would carry them a while and then trade off. They
carried them the whole way!! As we drank, during the climb, we refilled our
personal water from the bladders they carried. Obviously, they were
encouraging everyone to drink heavily!! We ate a lunch for dinner so we did no
cooking. We made it to Cypher's, the next morning, but were running low as we
arrived. 12 man crew. Don't remember if we "cameled up" (we require that all
drink 1.5 qt. as we break camp) that morning. Hot, sunny trail and
admittedly, we drank a lot, but all that water was barely enough. If my math is
correct, that is 4.5 quarts AND 1.7 liters per person. Except for the weigh (LOL)
you can't carry too much water at Philmont.
