Regarding water carriers: Beginning in 2005 the switch to Katadyn
MicroPur tablets may prompt you to rethink your water carrying
equipment. The MicroPur tablets are measured to treat one liter of
water and although more tablets can be used for larger containers it
becomes something of a guesstimate/overkill situation. If you have a
three quart container, for instance, you'll need three tablets and that
is a bit of an overdose.

I've recently been experimenting with the one liter carbonated (seltzer,
club soda) bottles as a lightweight and economical size. The plastic in
the carbonated water bottles is more substantial than still water
bottles and can handle rough treatment. At 50¢ to 75¢ these bottles are
a wonderful size and weight for backpacking. The small mouth opening
would mean that you'd still need one wide-mouth Nalgene for mixing
Gatorade. However, I have heard rumors that the powdered drink
manufacturers are looking to market packages for one liter servings;
similar to the small drink packs now on the market for the Crystal Light
drink mixes (still only in two liter packs for now).
