RE: [Philmont]: autumn adventure

Another reason that staying in cabins is not a good idea--they have been
empty since the summer season and the threat of Hanta-virus is real. During
the summer, the staff controls the rodent population and disinfects for
hanta. This does not happen at most camps during the autumn. It is not
worth a night in a cabin to risk this disease.
Also, listen to your guide regarding where to pitch tents--horses are
released into the backcountry during this time! My now-husband has a great
story abiout being "attacked" one night by a bear on an Autumn trek that
turned out to be a horse! :)
Have a great time--Philmont is amazing in the fall.
