AS you probably know, the most important crew function is camp setup.
80% of the crew problems can be eliminated if the crew sets up camp
within 30 minutes. In order to practice camp setup, classroom training
is required.
1. Teach the crew what is expected when the crew arrives at camp
a. Find the fire circle
b. Establish the bear-muda trianble (fire circle, sump,
bear bag) and keep all smellables within the triangle.
c. Unload packs, forming three piles
1) Food
2) Crew Gear
3) Personable Smellables
d. Hoist the Bear Bags
e. Put up the dining fly and stow crew equipment
f. Purify the water
g. AFTER all crew work is done, set up personal tents.
2. Teach the following in a classroom
a. Stove Lighting and Safety
b. Dishwashing
e. Map and Compass and Trail Profiling
3. Practice the aforementioned skills on a weekend afternoon.
Using full packs, hike to a campsite (about a mile away) and set up camp
and practice the skills learned in the classroom (actually cook
something to get bowls and spoons dirty so that dishwashing can be
practiced. Break camp and hike back another mile and repeat the
process.
Classroom should be done in February and March with the practice weekend
being the last weekend in March leaving April and May for full
shakdowns.

Subject: [Philmont]: 6 Months To Go
I am going with 2 crews to Philmont in June, and little work has done to
prepare them for it.
Having been twice, I am aware of the preparation required.
My idea is to compress what would have been 10 months of preparation
into 6.
Anyone out there faced this?
