>I know of no Philmont "Trail guide" as such.
There is a long out-of-print "Philmont Trails" booklet. (There is no date listed but I believe it's from ca. 1970) It is of interest mostly for historical purposes. It describes sections of trails between most of the camps.
Comments.
Philmont Trails was first published in 1966 and several other versions were available through the early / mid 70s. It is a great resource and hopefully one that Philmont will decide to revive, especially with the recent GIS / mapping effort they have made for them, it would be another way to recoup the costs of that project.
The 1966 version and two subsequent ones are available on-line at http://www.thewills.net/watchu/archive_other.htm. This is a page on the new website created by my Patriots Path Council in support of our Philmont preparation program, the Watchu Experience. Be aware that the file sizes are large, and will take a v-e-r-r-y long time to load with anything other than a broadband connection. As Mike noted, there has been a lot of trail construction and changes in camps in the past 30 years, so the documents do not necessarily match the current trail system or camps.
The posting of this information grew out of a thread on the List back in late October about the 1974 itineraries. A group, including Dr. Bob Klein, Julian Love, Jim Thompson, Earl Owens, Tom Wills and myself set out to collect as many of the TREKS/PEAKS Itinerary Guides and Guidebooks to Adventure as we could and make them available. When you go to the other pages in the left sidebar of the above link, you will see that we succeeded beyond our expectations in a very short time there are only a limited number of missing documents. Also, as noted on the page, permission was received from Philmont to post the documents.
In addition to the TREKS/PEAKS and the GtAs that were our focus, other documents, like Philmont Trails, were received and have been posted.
Of immediate interest to 2006 crews would be the 2005 versions of TREKS and the Guidebook.
We are continuing to look for the documents we are missing. If you have one of them, or know someone who might have one, please contact me OFF-LIST (abthomson@comcast.net) about what you have, and I will advise on how to get it to us we do not want or need multiple copies of a particular document sent if we turn up more than one. All documents will be scanned and returned in the condition they were received.
While you are one the website, go UP a couple pages and check out the rest of the site Tom Wills has done an outstanding job with it. While much is specific to our PPC contingent crews, some (particularly several sections of the FAQs and some of the Crew Development page) will be of use to any Philmont crew.
