Our two crews in 2000 were night and day on our SS trek for one reason
only. My crew left camp in the glow of sunrise- usually close to 5- every
day, often got to our next camp before lunch sometimes in time to do
program before lunch to and take the rest of the afternoon to do whatever.
This often involved playing ultimate frisbe or some other strenuous game.
The other crew never left befor 9-10. missed several programs, but really
did enjoy the hike. Both were first timers. Both had been given the talks
from voices of experience and chose to do it this way. Incidently, I am
also 51, finished another trek this summer, and live at ~ 700 ft. We
acclimatized fairly easily.
My son who was on that trek was a ranger last summer. His last crew was
averaging about 1/2 mph while they were hiking. All he could say when he
left was "good luck" as they were so ill prepared.

IMHO, the Super Strenuous treks are for those hiking dogs whose MAIN goal
at Philmont is to put as many miles on their feet as they can. This isn't
a knock on them. My observation, based on 3 treks (2 as an advisor) is
that the super strenuous trek'rs that we ran into spent the majority of
their days just hiking. Many of the "super strenuous" trek'rs are repeat
Philmont'rs. Program wasn't a priority and they missed their share of
program because they were still on the trail, or resting up from a previous
long day. Some pretty long days, hiking in the dark and not much "stopping
to smell the roses". On the plus side, they get to see a whole lot of the
ranch in a short time period. I'm guessing the sense of accomplishment for
them runs pretty high.....
Our trekking pace tries to average about 1.5 to 2.0 miles per hour
(including breaks, meals, etc.). A 100 mile trek would take between 50 and
70 hours of hiking at this pace. That is 5-7 hours of hiking per day,
every day. That's a lot of hiking. Not that is isn't doable, it's just a
lot of hiking.
Not that I am knocking this approach, if that is what the group wants to
do. For me, I know I CAN do a "super strenuous" trek, but that doesn't
mean I WANT to <g>. If the youth want it, I will do my best to make it
happen for them. YIS. Mike ('76, '02, '04 and '07).

OK, I'll bite. Now on the wrong side of 50, I admit to a quiet
satisfaction, and I suppose a form of comfort, that I can still hike 50
miles in 17-18 hours, that I can still scale a 5.10 face, and that I can
still hump a 40-50 pound pack on a Superstrenuous trek, and keep up with
(most of) my greyhounds. "Not Dead Yet!"
I hope I can still say the same in 10 years. I'm still working at it,
anyway....
