Re: [Philmont]: RE: [Philmont]: 6 Months To Go - Hiking Styles

Our crew in 2003 developed a routine during shakedown hikes. Nobody ever
hiked alone. The lead hikers stopped every 30 minutes or when they came to a
trail intersection (or mountaintop) until everyone was together. If an
intersection, we all agreed on the 'right' direction before proceeding. If the
stop was at a 30-minute stopping point, we took a short packs on or packs off
break. Once everyone was rested and ready to move on -- Nobody answered to,
"Who's not ready?" -- we started off again.

Each day, a different person was on point and a different person was on
sweep. Both those positions were on our crew's duty roster. Duty roster
included the 2 advisors who were not on vacation. Our crew were well enough
conditioned and working as a team when we arrived at Philmont that this approach
worked well for us. We met a lot of crews who did not seem to be working as a
team, and heard stories about many more.

We were a crew of 11: 2 adults & 9 young men ranging in age from 15 to 19.
The oldest boys grumbled for the first couple of days about the slow pace
(Hiking 101 one called it); but once we all acclimated, everyone settled down to
a satisfactory pace. In our direction of travel, we were never passed on
the trail but typically passed crews both uphill and downhill during any given
day while we kept a steady pace with our 30-minute rest stops.

We caterpillered (sp?) the uphill steeps with good success.
