David-depends on what crew gear each person carries? We tried to parcel
out the different parts of crew gear based on the kind and configuration of
the individual's pack. Smaller packs generally had stuff that could be
lashed on the outside (dining fly, bearbags, bearbag ropes, pots, cook pot,
tent, etc.). Those with more internal room carried the food, because it is
bulky and not convenient to lash on the outside. As someone with a huge
pack (my choice), I carried much of the food for my food group because I
had the room and it prevented crushing. In a TYPICAL backpack (as much as
any is typical), I would reserve at least 1/2 of your main compartment for
food and crew gear. I just remember the PILE of food that we got before we
started the trek. 4 days of meals for 12 people equals 72 bags.
Conservatively, two meals would fit in a standard shoe box. So imagine
finding a home for 36 shoe boxes in your packs? 3 per person? Just my 2
cents, your mileage may vary. YIS. Mike ('76, '02, '04, '07)

Our next parent's/crew meeting is Tuesday. Among other things, we want to
simulate what a Philmont loaded pack will look and weigh. We can simulate
the 35-50# pack, but does anyone have suggestions on a simulation of how
much room the crew gear and food will take in an individual pack after it
is loaded with personal gear?
