It's too late to order Philmont trail meals attempt the proper sizing, but I
would guess that after a commisary stop, you could easily fill between 1/2
to 3/4 (per person) of a large grocery store paper bag worth of food to
simulate the volume. Toss in a two man tent and that should be enough crew
gear to get the message across.

Subject: [Philmont]: Crew Gear and Food
Date: Fri, 13 Jan 2006 10:24:43 -0500
Our next parent's/crew meeting is Tuesday. Among other things, we want to
simulate what a Philmont loaded pack will look and weigh. We can simulate
the 35-50# pack, but does anyone have suggestions on a simulation of how
much room the crew gear and food will take in an individual pack after it is
loaded with personal gear?
