Assuming a 4,000 Kelty external frame pack - it will be stuffed completely full with the sleeping bag strapped on the bottom and the sleep pad strapped on the top. The bottom compartment will be filled with personal gear. The upper compartment will be filled with food and crew gear. We took enough bear bags that each persons food share was in a bear bag in their pack to avoid spills and to make things quick and easy. The side pockets will be filled with water bottles and maybe a fuel bottle.
We reduced our gear as much as we could. We were almost, but not quite, as reduced as what Dr. Bob discusses. Our Scouts packs weighed from around 32 to around 38 and the advisors packs weighed from 44 to 50, with 3 liters of water at base camp ready to hit the trail.
Philmont recommends a 4,000 cu in for external and 5,000 cu in internal minimum sizes. We had one Scout bring a Kelty Yukon which is around 3,000 cu in. We could not fit all of his share of food and crew gear in his pack. Myself and another advisor used internal frame packs that ran around 5,000 - 5,500 cu in. and there was no spare room in them.

Subject: [Philmont]: Crew Gear and Food
Our next parent's/crew meeting is Tuesday. Among other things, we want to simulate what a Philmont loaded pack will look and weigh. We can simulate the 35-50# pack, but does anyone have suggestions on a simulation of how much room the crew gear and food will take in an individual pack after it is loaded with personal gear?
