I carried a army surplus wooden packboard until I got my Kelty. Saw one
today hanging at Neptune's mountaineering today and cracked up.

Not only were packs and frames sold separately, Philmont rented them
separately. In 1970, I borrowed a canvas BSA backpack from a friend, but he
did not have a frame. My brother had used the same pack the year before and
had rented a frame at Philmont, so I planned to do the same. When I got
there, however, they were out of pack frames, so they rented me an army
surplus wooden packboard with canvas webbing. With my canvas pack, wooden
packboard, leather work boots and Philmont canvas tents, it was a tough 10
days, but worth it. I went back two years later (with a nylon pack and
aluminum external frame).
