I am not convinced that you need to backpack every day
to make it a valuable conditioning exercise.

Dan has hit the nail on the head. Remember in Phys Ed 101, exercise breaks down muscle tissue. Rest builds it up.

Ask any doctor or trainer and they advise exercise every OTHER day at the most. Give your muscles time to build up, not just tear them down.

Also, every office building has an excellent "Philmont Trail Simulator" usually found in the back part of the building. It's called the stairs. Carry your pack to work with you and use the stairs every other day and you will be amazed at what it does for you.
