RE: [Philmont]: Hiking Pace

I have personal experience on my side when I say that separating into 2
groups, outside of an emergency situation, is a bad idea. Not only do you
have the chance to lose each other, but it's strictly against Philmont's
rules.

What happens if the first group does not see the trail junction and the
second one does? Our crew missed a trail junction last year.

Perhaps I should note, we had 13 in the Crew. So we basically were one short
of two full Crews. I can see small Crews concerned about being in groups of
3 or 4. Having 7 and 6, each with an adult and experienced Scouts did not
concern me. They stopped at every trail junction, and at set intervals.

I am usually the fastest hiker in my crew, but I ABSOULUTELY take exception
to the above - a crew should NEVER separate on the trail (except, of course,

sending a group of four in an emergency to get help.) No ifs, ands, or
buts. It is an health and safety issue.
