Not to be harsh, but, I believe you answered this is your first sentence.
"...we had 13 in the crew" You were operating as a single crew of 13 persons
according to Philmont. The rest of your post speaks directly to the reason for
keeping the whole crew together.
Now if there were 2 independent crews of 7 plus persons following the same
itinerary as sister crews; well let's say one crew missing the trail junction
and other one not missing the trail junction could be considered a lesson in
navigation. The main point being, the 2 "official" crews stayed together and
operated as a single unit.
