We (advisors) don't, for our crews. In our units, this is a youth
decision, not an advisor decision. As long as the kid is not a
danger to the crew (physical danger, not danger to the crew being
able to gell or have a good time), if the crew as a group decides
this kid should still go, they are advised that they are the ones
who will be living with the consequences. I'm not going to step
in and overrule the youth on something like this.
I *do* mention to all the youth that whatever relationships develop
as a result of any problems that occur are likely to affect how
they are treated in the troop when they get back (oh, you want a
scout spirit sign off on your rank advancement? Do you remember
what happened at Philmont? You want to hold a position of
responsibility, do you? And how are you going to act differently
than you did for your Philmont trek?). It does seem to wake them
up a bit.
I will also say that I have *never* had a problem getting the kids
to our shakedowns. These are kids who already like high adventure,
and our shakedowns are every bit as adventurous as Philmont. One
of the advantages on living near the Sierras :-).
It's a growth opportunity folks, not a discipline problem.
